What ports does Wavestore use for communication?
The ports used are described below, in approximate order of how important they are to the operation of Wavestore or how commonly they are used.
In many cases, only port 8601 is needed as the WaveView client connects to the server using this port only.
In version 5 and version 6:
- TCP Port 8601 (Wavestore Venus Protocol) - This is the port used for communication between a client such as WaveView, WaveView Mobile or WaveMatrix Display, and the Wavestore server.
- TCP Port 8602 (Wavestore Venus Alarm Protocol) - This is the port used by the Wavestore server to send outbound event notifications. Events are normally sent from the Wavestore to a 3rd party device so you shouldn't need to open a firewall port, however if you are sending the events from a Wavestore to another Wavestore, the firewall on the receiving end will need this port open.
- TCP Port 22 (SSH) - This is used for remote maintenance by Wavestore staff. The service is disabled by default but if you require Wavestore staff to inspect your system, it may be required to provide access to this port.
- TCP Port 554 (RTSP) - This is used for streaming video over RTSP and ONVIF streaming services as an alternative to the Wavestore Venus Protocol.
- TCP Port 80 (HTTP) - Used for some simple HTTP services and ONVIF streaming services offered by the Wavestore.
- TCP Port 443 (HTTPS) - Used for some simple HTTPS services and ONVIF streaming services offered by the Wavestore.
- UDP Port 123 (NTP) - This is used so that the Wavestore can be used as an NTP server. The recommended way of setting up NTP is to configure all Wavestores to use an external time source, in which case this port is used for replies to the NTP client only. However in some cases users may configure a Wavestore server group so that all servers sync time to one of the Wavestores. In this case, incoming traffic to the master Wavestore will be on this port and any intermediate firewall should allow traffic through.
- UDP Port 161 (SNMP) - This port is used by the Simple Network Management Protocol. It is used for inspecting the status of the Wavestore using a 3rd party SNMP client. If you wish to use this facility then any intermediate firewall needs to allow this traffic through. The service is disabled by default.
- UDP Port 3702 (ws-discovery) - This is used so that Wavestores can be discovered on the network by ONVIF clients.
- TCP Port 888 (3dm2) - This is the web interface for 3Ware RAID cards. This service is disabled by default and only available if a 3Ware RAID card is installed.
- TCP Port 7701 (WaveMatrix Display) - This is used when the Wavestore appliance is configured to be a WaveMatrix Display device. Normally this service is disabled. When enabled, access to this port is required such that the WaveMatrix Control and WaveMatrix Config applications can issue commands to the WaveMatrix Display.
- UDP ports 8000+ and 10000+ - Wavestore venusd opens various ports above 8000 and above 10000 for use in video and audio and metadata streaming over UDP and for discovery protocols running over UDP. These ports are opened as required. If set up in the recommended way then the Wavestore does not use UDP streaming, and discovery is only used during setup to make it easy for the user to find cameras. None of these ports are critical to normal operation unless you specifically select UDP streaming.
